Sweet Liberty
Croatian national bard Ivan Gundulić was born in Dubrovnik in 1589. An heir to a wealthy aristocratic family, Gundulić received an excellent education, studying humanities, philosophy, and law. Though he held a several important political functions in the Dubrovnik Republic, he is remembered primarily as one of the most prominent writers in the history of Croatia. His works, most notably, the play Dubravka and epic Osman, are imbued with religious fervor and stylistic richness and are considered the pinnacle of national Baroque literature. His famous verses on liberty are still sung every year during the opening of the world-renowned Dubrovnik Summer Festival: Fair liberty, beloved liberty, liberty sweetly avowed… no silver nor gold, not life itself could replace the reward of thy pure and sublime grace.
