Chapel

The Chapel of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus is the innermost spiritual heart of The Pucić Palace.

Like many historic patrician homes, The Pucić Palace has an integrated chapel that long served the spiritual and religious needs of the Pucić family. In 1763 thanks to Sabo Pucić and his wife, this Baroque chapel gained the special privilege of celebrating mass conducted by the Dubrovnik archbishop during the Feast of the Sacred Heart. In the light of the fact that this privilege was gained two years before the Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus became an official Catholic date in Europe, the Palace’s Chapel testifies to the fact that Dubrovnik citizens were not merely following but anticipating spiritual trends.

Now lost, the Chapel’s original altarpiece was portraying Madonna and the city’s protector St Blaise looking at Jesus who is pointing at his burning heart. The present altarpiece, which was painted by Ivo Scatollini and consecrated in 1938, was commissioned by Baron Mayneri, owner of the Pucić Palace at the time and the husband of one of the Pucić family heiresses, Magdalena. Damaged during the 1990s Homeland War, both chapel and altarpiece have today been restored and open to the public.

Excelling in simple yet polished elegance, permeated with an elevated spiritual atmosphere, The Chapel of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus is a popular place for intimate weddings in Dubrovnik.
